    tick, tick...BOOM!

    ★★★★

Difficult to connect with at first, tick, tick...BOOM! opens with struggling artist, Johnathan (Andrew Garfield) desperate to Create (with a capital C). Having forgone the repugnant lifestyle of simply striving for gainful employment, he instead works tirelessly to complete his rock musical, years in the making--driven primarily by his fear of not having accomplished something by his fast approaching (gasp!) 30th birthday. The number of times Johnathan mentions that his 30th birthday is coming, with this countenance of existential dread,…

    The Last Duel

Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel culminates in one of most viscerally exciting displays of combat on screen I have seen in some time. It’s really a sight to see and worth the price of admission. While there are a few other battles sequences throughout the film, it’s not a sweeping epic akin to Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and the like. The other battles are very, very brief. The rest of the film leading up to the titular last duel centers around…

My kids actually picked this out to watch tonight. Even though I just watched this a month ago, I can’t say no to sharing a movie I love with my kids. We have been watching Invasion the AppleTV+ show together. The show definitely evokes some of the spirit of Arrival, but good god it takes a long time to get moving. We’re 7 episodes in and it feels like nothing has really happened yet.
One other note about my watch…

It really is a shame more people didn’t see this in theaters, and multiple times as this film definitely begs to be seen multiple times. While I still echo the same thoughts of my initial review, I appreciate film even more upon revisiting it a second time. The disparate perspectives reveal themselves to be even more nuanced than I had picked up on during my first watch. Character depth is portrayed not necessarily solely by viewing each character’s perspective. Rather,…

I had never seen this before. I (checks notes) really liked this. I think would need to see this at least three more times to speak intelligently about it. There’s obviously a lot going on under the surface. In general, though, I love those kinds of films that require a fair amount of unpacking to reveal the essence of the thematic elements. The performances are wonderful. Favorite moment is Donnie calling Elizabeth a “fuck-ass” and she quips back telling him…

    House of Gucci

    ★★★

House of Gucci is such a weird fucking movie.  It’s deliciously entertaining, yet also plodding and uninteresting. Jared Leto fucking went for it and the result is possibly one of the most insane performances I’ve ever seen. Gaga and Driver reign supreme. Pacino, Irons, and Hyak round out the cast really well. While it’s definitely overlong and feels it in places, I was also spellbound by it’s many charms.  Though I don’t think the film achieves it’s lofty ambitions, I can…
