Viy ★★½

Though the plot is intriguing and the sets are often gorgeous, this Russian folk horror film is too rough around the edges to stand the test of time. Almost every genuinely tense scene is deflated by some laughably cheesy special effects or Kuravlyov's goofy overacting. The short runtime would help if it didn't get duller and more repetitive as it went on.
