alucarda was so wacky & silly for saying “are you afraid of dying? i mean dying loving each other, dying together so we may live as one forever, with the same blood always flowing through our veins. darling, darling justine... i live in you. would you die for me? i love you so. i have never been in love with anyone and never shall... unless it’s with you” to justine like 15 minutes after they met. also the demonic possession or whatever. definitely wacky & silly for that too

This only my first Bresson film but he’s already living up to everything I’ve heard about him. Though the film transparently makes a point of not being a thriller, Bresson’s style here is so incredibly gorgeous from the first second to the last that it’s still hard not to piss yourself out of excitement. The camera feels almost like an extension of the actors, the movements of both being subtle and measured in a way that’s kind of... satisfying? Bresson’s…

I will never get over how good the dialogue in this is. Always so on the ball with energy and wit. Every word in every conversation bounces so perfectly off of those before it, but never in a way that’s obnoxiously contrived. The little individual quirks in each characters’ speech breathe so much life into them and watching them pick up phrases from other characters with their own unique nuances is as endearing as it is illuminating. It’s all so good and so well delivered across the cast. BANGÈR.

I’m not usually super put off by movie gore but I spent most of this wondering how fast I could make it to the bathroom if I started throwing up. I hate this film, it is my least favourite thing, and everyone who worked on it is not my friend. Other than that, it was pretty good I think.

So so elegant and natural and genuine. Kirishima and Endo are such vivid reflections of so many people I’ve known and people I’ve been. It feels almost like a brutal self-analysis on the part of screenwriter Yuka Honcho, a genuine attempt to interpret and reckon with her part in a difficult relationship. Though, both characters are portrayed with such patient care and understanding that it’s difficult to tell which part that might be.

Not as good as the Solanin manga though that could be said of most things. As a film in its own right, it’s fine—good even—but I can’t quite shake my disappointment for its work as an adaptation (so I’m going to whine about it).

Watching it, I felt like a rock skipping over the ocean; I knew I was flying over deep water, but I could only see it in glimpses, the brief moments my handsome rock face collided with…
