An outrageously fun and original addition to the 'vaguely left-leaning black comedy' sub-genre of recent films, of which Parasite (2019) - and to a lesser extent, Sorry to Bother You (2018) - form part. Unfortunately, it suffers from many of the same problems as its Palme d'Or-winning competitor with respect to its political messaging.

There's so much to love about Bacurau's depiction of community solidarity, self-sufficiency and provincial resistance culture in the face of local corruption and *broadly Western* imperialism.…

Gerwig's screenplay is incredibly tight and the amount of attention and development each character gets in the duration of just 94 MINUTES is insane. They practically all get their own freestanding arc. Though I sometimes found the Quirkiness of Gerwig's world a bit obnoxious and affected for a film this close to a verité, everything about it still manages to feel so rich and multi-layered.

The airport car scene and Danny's confrontation with Lady Bird at the café are both unforgettable.

The longest honeymoon phase ever finally comes to a bittersweet end. My favourite of the trilogy by quite a bit.

Though the film is a technical marvel (I can't recall how many times friends told me it was "sHoT iN a SiNgLe TaKe"), I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters or their plights, nor did it offer any new perspective or insight into the human experience of war. A pretty forgettable film overall.
