Joe’s review published on Letterboxd:
Magnetic Rose is a creative science fiction short written by Satoshi Kon, directed by Koji Morimoto (who worked on Akira and The Animatrix among others), and with music by legendary composer Yoko Kanno, so of course it's brilliant. I love the haunting, decrepit backgrounds and the opera soundtrack. The mechanical designs and detailed character animations really do a lot to make the world feel believable (look at how Heintz takes off the exoskeleton suit before it gets too heavy from gravity). I won't spoil the story, but for a 45-minute short it managed to surprise me while still being consistent and complete. Overall Magnetic Rose is a great example of the creativity and visual spectacle animation can bring to the world of science fiction.
