  • Police Story

    Police Story

Panning with distorted wide angle lenses and boxey 80s futuristic Mitsubishis. Looked a dream in this new restoration. The shopping complex showdown is possibly the best Jackie sequence in cinema history. Masterclass in how to film martial arts. Jackie had been around enough directors by 84’ that he knew what visually worked. Keep the camera wide, out of the way and give the actors room to do a long take.

I want a cherry red Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo! 🚗

  • Naked

Pre-millennium tension. People always go for Fight Club. It’s all here..  it’s more raw, you can feel it on the streets of London in its empty weekend office spaces and back alleys.

  • Point Blank

    Point Blank

beautiful pristine super wide cinema photography.... then some slow-mo.

  • Blood Simple

    Blood Simple

There's something very pure about Blood Simple its the distilled sensibility of a Coen Brothers film. The story has been redone bigger and bolder in the form of Fargo*. But this is one I go to every time. Visually it has more in-common with 80s horror with its backlit smoke and haunted furnaces than Raymond Chandler. Lots of M Emmet Walsh, lots! So much I love about this film. The Brothers had previously worked as crew on Raimi's Evil Dead…

  • Solaris

‘Men act and women appear’ - John Berger, Art of Seeing (1972)

  • The Thing

    The Thing

My favourite past time is watching the opening of this film with people who’ve never seen it before...

  • Escape from New York

    Escape from New York

‘the Gulf-Fire is waiting...’ My favourite Carpenter film. Still one of the greatest, most confident 20min openings ive ever seen. There’s a rhythm to it that leads up to Frank Doubleday standing in a empty lower Manhattan street. He’s hypnotic, it’s like a amped up theatre workshop version of his Street Thunder gang member from Assault 13.

  • Blade Runner

    Blade Runner

First time in a cinema... 07' Cut. It's so dense and visually rich you notice all this detail you wouldn't normally pick up in the frame. Relentlessly designed to death. Like T-2 last month.. a sound system with the acoustic space. That mad electric harp sound and that base drum crescendo kicks in when future LA skyline appears!. I'd been warned it was a moment.

  • Robot Jox

    Robot Jox

Still the greatest Saturday morning show ever conceived. Only thing missing from this experience was the Rental 'ARENA' trailer reel at the start.

  • Repo Man

    Repo Man

Everything is here. Still the coolest show on earth.

  • Paris, Texas

Foreign directors being better at critiquing American culture - Part 3

  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day

    Terminator 2: Judgment Day

I had unfinished business with T-2. Couple of us tried to get into see it at Quinton Cannon Cinema when we're 12/13 years of age. Due to some associate lobbing M&Ms around the foyer. We got our cover blown.

The big one. I wore out 2 copies of this movie on VHS. Never tired of it but possibly I tired it out. If you find a film that you watched too much in your youth. Cinema restoration is the last resort.…
