  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

    ★★★

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

You know what I like on my 2nd viewing? How much it leans on Raiders of the Lost Ark more than any other film in the series to make Star Wars. George did it. Look at the ROTJ Sail Barge/Sarlaac sequence... The way the action sequences pile on top of each other. Never would of turned out like that if wasn’t for Spielberg’s energetic work on Raiders.

Rise’s Indiana Jones bits?. Poe’s khaki outfit was instant from trailers. Plays out…

  • Hell Comes to Frogtown

    Hell Comes to Frogtown

    ★★★

Still into that Spaghetti Western opening titles. This should be more energetic than it turned out to be, like Cherry 2000. I suspect the Hollywood production co (and Director) that turned up halfway through sapped it of momentum. Ingredients are all there.. It’s just a little flat. Trying to turn it into last years big hit. When it started out as the gooood trash.

  • Forbidden Planet

    Forbidden Planet

    ★★★

That MGM / Disney creative production values applied to Sci Fi. Shakespeare and Fraud. That middle THE EXPOSITION is still slog. The iD was unnerving as child and the electronic sound design is still there.

  • Climax

    Climax

    ★★★

Made me want to go listen to Windowlicker by AFX. Once got stuck at New Years Eve house party in middle of Derbyshire nowhere in the snow... Horrendous.

  • Logan

    Logan

    ★★★

It’s was OK... just OK. Imagine this had a 2nd act like Starman / a road movie odyssey that you forget for 20mins about the pursuers. For these characters of develop from being bitter and angst. They can have it back at the end. Then I might of cared a bit more about the loss.

  • Batman

    Batman

    ★★★

It was a summer of Batman logos everywhere.... and acid house smiley faces. Market stores all over Europe flogging knock off Batman and Rave Culture tees, caps and bomber jackets.

It has its problems mainly in being cluttered. I havn’t seen a Warner Batman film that wasn’t. But it was the first time anybody had taken this character and moved it away from the 60s TV show. That was been shown on TV in the late 80s to set comparison.…

  • Dominion Tank Police

    Dominion Tank Police

    ★★★

Buaku: Yesterday’s gone.. and nothing you own.. nothing you do can bring it back..

  • All Tomorrow's Parties

    All Tomorrow's Parties

    ★★★

I want to go back. Miss this so much...

  • Pacific Rim

    Pacific Rim

    ★★★

I like the Robot Jox bits...

  • The Princess Bride

    The Princess Bride

    ★★★

Late to the party. Don’t get this. Always caught parts of Bride as a kid. Something has always felt flat to me. Not sure why. Listen It’s not terrible. Charming like Andre. but a little.... flat.

  • Highlander

    Highlander

    ★★★

It’s been while. Beautifully big expansive shots. Yer mans painting with light, dropping exposure on skies to get the most of that Highland landscape. That 80s music video wearhouse set piece at the end.  Modern day Kruger prowling scenes really take the beats from The Terminator. Above all it gets away with it all. Just by sheer confidence in its concept. Dear god the accents and dialogue are far more dog toffee than I ever remember it being as a teenager. Micheal Kamen’s big training montage music is bigger and better than the film it’s being contained by.

  • Ready Player One

    Ready Player One

    ★★★

Yeah I know, I know pop culture cringe... blah, blah, blah. Yeah internet vitriol. You made this film (book) if you like it or not. Only real crime is other Hollywood films have beat it with the who’s who ref trick..
This film is more interesting in the real world sequences. Thats not just because my reasons for watching this was for the Digbeth, Snow Hill - Birmz filming locations. My backyard. Also this seems to be the part were Spielberg’s…
