  • RoboCop 2

    RoboCop 2

    ★★★½

I was slightly obsessed with this film when I was 16. Partly because I watched Robocop too much on the double bill VHS I owned. Beautifully shot by that Empire Strikes Back man. It gets the feel. Great cast. It's better than many give it credit for outside of the memorable Phil Tippett monster movie set piece at the end.

  • Enemy Mine

    Enemy Mine

    ★★★½

Its kinda 'Hell in the Pacific' in space with two extra chapters at the end. Beautiful crunchy practical effect opening. Great use of barren volcanic locations for the alien world. Two actors at the top of their game. Only let down by Maurice Jarre recycling musical accents from Mad Max III - Thunderdome. Shame because the chilling synth opening work promised much, much more.

  • '71

    '71

    ★★★½

I came here because the main trunk of it has a Escape From New York / Assault on Presinct 13 vibe to it. That's a good thing.

  • Blair Witch

    Blair Witch

    ★★★½

A true sequel. Great use of modern camera tech. Time distortion concept is far chilling than anything else. If it could take anything from 98 film. The subtly of the audio in the original. You felt yourself straining to hear. Here? everything sits right in front of the mix which gets bit predictable after a while.

  • Jurassic Park III

    Jurassic Park III

    ★★★½

Always remember its purity. Its a little monster feature for kids. It doesn't try be anything greater than that. Therefore it doesn't have the problems of its unbalanced predecessors.

  • The Keep

    The Keep

    ★★★½

Beautiful, broken and extremely compelling. Fairytale for adults. In a post Pan's Labyrinth world Dov Hoenig's cut would of faired better to the tyranny of 80s test screenings. One and half stars off to the guy at paramount who edited it to resemble Friday 13th movie.

  • Bottle Rocket

    Bottle Rocket

    ★★★½

Frank from Michael Mann's Thief started up a Landscape Gardening cover in Dallas...

  • 10 Cloverfield Lane

    10 Cloverfield Lane

    ★★★½

Mr Goodman. Astonishing tension. Never expected anything this tightly made. I think it slightly shits the bed with 'content' in its closing 20mins. Less is more.. don't listen to the Internet. Something not learned from Cloverfield's lingering shot in Central Park.

  • The Mercenary

    The Mercenary

    ★★★½

Sergio Corbucci's take on Bullet for the General / Good The Bad and The Ugly and the first part in his Zapata Western trilogy. It has good amount of polished to it compared to his earlier Django offering. A lot less shaky zooms. Jack Palance is extremely watchable. It feels a little overlong in comparison to the next film in the trilogy Companeros which is bit more short and punchy.

  • Blindman

    Blindman

    ★★★½

Following the Yojimbo / Fistful of Dollars tradition. This is Zatoichi blind swordsman transferred to the west. Strong soundtrack. Ringo Starr is a convincingly threatening psychotic younger brother.

  • Iron Eagle

    Iron Eagle

    ★★★½

Obsessed with this film as a child on VHS and it holds up 25 years later. Yes, I'm gonna go there. Its the better fighter jet film of 1986. Top Gun felt vaporous with its distant characters in 1986 and still does. Iron Eagle is big and dumb but the jets and what they do sit better within the story. Kid wants to break his captured pilot Dad out from behind enemy lines. You wouldn't believe this was directed by…

  • Pee-wee's Big Holiday

    Pee-wee's Big Holiday

    ★★★½

Signed up for Netflix purely just to watch this.

Has the beating heart of a 80s kids movie, a rare thing in 2016'.

I thought the Robbery/Motel bit was going to be that kinda awkward to watch with the kids, as in:
'Oh ok, is this gonna be a Russ Meyer/Eric Stanton thing? No. no. good.. haha. just family fun.'

Hints of Tim Burton's film masterpiece and not that crap one set in a fun fair.. a joy!

(on further investigation Netflix didn't have Robojox.. so the service has been binned)
