  • Tank Girl

    Tank Girl

    ★★

1995 wasn’t a good year in British Comic stores. We’d already witnessed most of our talent being poached by the US in the late 80s, for what turned out to be the a lot of empty promises. By mid 90s American mainstream comics where dying on their arses. Indies were the new frontier.

I’m not sure what came first this or Judge Dredd from Hollywood. A lot of mistrust of things being sold back to us. Nobody would give either…

  • The Martian

    The Martian

    ★★★½

Some people would see the lack of peril as novelty.. I didn’t. Just made me think of Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack for Mission to Mars. How a mediocre film was elevated by that soundtrack. Maybe somebody could do a swap.

It’s better than Alien Covenant... I guess.

  • Johnny Mnemonic

    Johnny Mnemonic

    ★★★½

That Masamune Shirow lifted aesthetic for set prod value, specially in Jones and the interface head set. Henry Rollins and ICE T being put in everything by their agents in the mid 90s.

  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

    ★★★

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

You know what I like on my 2nd viewing? How much it leans on Raiders of the Lost Ark more than any other film in the series to make Star Wars. George did it. Look at the ROTJ Sail Barge/Sarlaac sequence... The way the action sequences pile on top of each other. Never would of turned out like that if wasn’t for Spielberg’s energetic work on Raiders.

Rise’s Indiana Jones bits?. Poe’s khaki outfit was instant from trailers. Plays out…

  • Hell Comes to Frogtown

    Hell Comes to Frogtown

    ★★★

Still into that Spaghetti Western opening titles. This should be more energetic than it turned out to be, like Cherry 2000. I suspect the Hollywood production co (and Director) that turned up halfway through sapped it of momentum. Ingredients are all there.. It’s just a little flat. Trying to turn it into last years big hit. When it started out as the gooood trash.

  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

    ★★★½

I’m not saying anything. I cried the same quoter as the last two. Need to see it again.. a good send off.‬

  • Forbidden Planet

    Forbidden Planet

    ★★★

That MGM / Disney creative production values applied to Sci Fi. Shakespeare and Fraud. That middle THE EXPOSITION is still slog. The iD was unnerving as child and the electronic sound design is still there.

  • Climax

    Climax

    ★★★

Made me want to go listen to Windowlicker by AFX. Once got stuck at New Years Eve house party in middle of Derbyshire nowhere in the snow... Horrendous.

  • The Warriors

    The Warriors

    ★★★½

Never actually seen this all the way throu. It’s ridiculous, but it gets away with it. Some of the gangs look they in a off Broadway show instead of defending it. But it seems to power on throu on concept & conviction in that opening 20mins. There seems to be a bit call a response here: Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 > Hill’s The Warriors > Carpenter’s Escape From New York....

  • Terminator: Dark Fate

    Terminator: Dark Fate

    ★★½

lil’ flat but functional, like a T-800 that’s been chewed up and squashed in a 3rd act. Don’t ever look up anything plot on this. There’s one or two biggies. Left thinking about Aliens and what Alien3 did with the toy set.

  • The Fall

    The Fall

    ★★★★

  • Being Frank: The Chris Sievey Story

Being Frank: The Chris Sievey Story

    ★★★★½

The ending finished me off.. I remember having a chat with John Cooper Clarke back stage at a theatre I use to work at. I got him to sign one of his 45s ‘I Married a Monster from Outer Space’

I asked John about Frank. He mentioned he’d hadn’t been very well, and this was one of the few shows Sidebottom hadn’t done with Clarke on their joint tour around the country that summer. People woke up to the news…
