The program of shorts that this was on, BEAUTIFUL, was all well and good, but it made me miss film. Digital makes me sad when it is not perfectly done (presentation and prodcuction-wise).

    Upstream Color

Need to see this again. I admire it but it is so serious and might not quite be as mysterious as it wants to be.

  • The Legend of Kaspar Hauser

    The Legend of Kaspar Hauser

Heard a dude on the way out of this say, "That wasn't as pretentious as I thought it would be." He is right, but it is pretentious, just goofily so. It's absurdism peppered with bits that would not be too far out of place in a McKay/Ferrell joint. The B&W is just right and they got their money's worth shelling out for Gallo. Nice to see him just let loose and funny it up.

I doubt this represents a trend in New Italian Cinema, but I can hope.

  • Holy Motors

    Holy Motors

Second viewing was even more emotionally fraught. Carax's vision is simultaneously old-fashioned and forward looking, an elegy shrouded in broken hope.
