I don’t vouch for my comprehension skills, so I completely missed the first time around the heartbreaking nature of Briska’s hearing loss (told in a shot) and the way she has to turn her head in order to converse with her husband, while other heartbreaking moments stand out even further, like Briska telling Chrystal to “Stay with us” - her by all respects new family. In all actuality, Shyamalan’s version of Journey to Italy, the acceleration of denaturizing rust serving as the same grim metonymy as the flash-deaths from volcanic earth of Pompeii in the Rossellini film, and the similar use of museum work to cast deep shades onto a relationship.
