The Life of Oharu

The Life of Oharu ★★★★★

A great deal of The Life of Oharu's sadness comes straight from the tragedy that surrounds its title character, but Kenji Mizoguchi always shows empathy upon every frame. But in Mizoguchi's examinations of her lingering sorrows, there's also a bigger picture being painted towards the world in which she lives within: one that has been skewered towards the favouring of those who continue to oppress women, and the coldness reflects the cruelty that she continues to endure.

An all-time great, if I say so myself.
