The feminine urge to compulsively re-watch Ishtar

I cannot get these Rogers and Clarke songs out of my head. It's a brain worm, a disease.
While washing dishes I hear echoes of "baby (baby), love you (love you), baby (baby)"
As I fold laundry I mentally wrestle with stopping "there's a wardrobe of love in my eyes, look around and see if there's something your size" from leaving my lips
I pull out my hair at work, trying not to…

What an incredible seething, acid-tongued, scorched earth indictment of the US's "Manifest Destiny" mindset over Central American (generally, Nicaraguan specifically) relations - absolutely the alpha and omega of Big Hollywood Studio funding mistakes!! Highly recommend reading Graham's excellent review for supplemental details.

Ed Harris is brilliant as the solemn, insecure and vain imperial representation of self-righteous conquest over land and body everywhere he sets foot. Ever advancing, he moves like a cancerous jet-black shadow through each scene, impervious to the…

Absolutely loved the tension of drama vs comedy in every scene as Scheinert forces you to run the gamut of the weirdest possible emotional experiences back-to-back. This is another A24 that never really got the 15 minutes of recognition it deserved. With the embarrassing heart of Swiss Army Man and the quirky police procedural vibe of Fargo, a fan of either will be a fan of Dick Long.

The Daniels directors are so up my alley that it feels like…

    The Master

    ★★★½

The Master burned hot, bright, and fast through my evening. The cast is stacked with talent, the performances felt explosive and powerful, the tension in the subtext was gripping, and the plot piqued my interest. You'd think adding all of these variables up would amount to stronger feelings in the end, but I don't think this really stirred me up emotionally by the time the credits rolled. Kind of a confusing confluence of reactions!

I have been excited to watch this for 15 years. I've been dreading watching this for 15 years. After reading the book and hearing of an upcoming adaptation, I figured this would simultaneously be very up-my-alley and completely devastating - so I put it off. And boy was that right. My fuggin' chest hurts.

And hey, the novel took place in 2021 so, you know, cheers brexiters

Fuck critics, you can kiss my whole asshole
    - Jay-Z

Every single person who had a hand in killing this movie, and subsequently Elaine May's entire career, ought to rot in Hollywood Hell if they're not already dead (rest in piss). All those smucks in Columbia Pictures' publicity department, hawks like Puttnam, hacks like Roger Ebert, and every other critic that regurgitated lines about this being the worst movie ever made (without even watching it, I'm sure) squashed the diverse…
