It’s rare to have seen the sequel to a film before seeing the original. But that’s exactly what I did with Kung Fu Panda. 2 years ago I went on a cruise with my family. There was a TV in the room that we stayed in and there was a cycle that repeated every couple of nights. One night, when I couldn’t sleep, Kung Fu Panda 2 came on and I had a ton of fun. It took me quite some time to watch this film, but I am glad as I liked it even more than the second.
Kung Fu Panda is a really nice animated film. I don’t necessarily have anything super negative to say, but I just don’t think there is much that stands out from the overall product. I did have some nitpicks, as I wish they gave the “The Furious Five” more depth. They don’t really have personalities in this film, other than occasionally joking either with or at Po. I think that the sequel does a better job on that front, where I felt like there was just more to the characters that are “The Furious Five.” The good is essentially everything else. Po is a really likable character and Jack Black is the perfect man to voice him. Shifu has a lot of depth to him and Dustin Hoffman does a great job voicing him. The rest of the cast is excellent as well, Seth Rogan to Jackie Chan. Everyone does their job, and does it well. The animation here is excellent as well. I could have done without some of the fat jokes directed at Po, but that doesn’t take away from me having a great time.
Overall, Kung Fu Panda is a great animated film led by an impressive voice cast and numerous aspects that are simply fun.
