Frances Ha was a confusing, dizzying film for me to watch. I watched it online with a friend, messaging our thoughts to each other. And already at the first scene of them in Central Park my first words were “oh God”. This would become the recurring words throughout the film.

The scene with the snowman made me cry. A really well directed and beautiful film that sheds a lot of light into homelessness and the stigma surrounding lower income people in Japan. Something that a lot of people don’t think when it comes to the country. Will make you sad if you don’t have a functional family. Will also make you sad if you have a functional family. It’s gonna make you sad. My soul felt a little snatched away after I watched it.

It was beautiful but man both the characters were so unlikeable. Clémentine was so wrapped up in her quirks she didn’t even seem like a person. Can we address that she basically harangued herself into Joel’s life in a way that was pushy and strange (even when we realise that wasn’t the first time). And Joel.
