bored the shit out of me as a kid but this time around i couldn’t help but love spending time in bobby z’s fucked-up nightmare realm, where an ill-conceived tom hanks character lurks around every corner. somehow deeply disturbing while also conveying a palpable sense of warmth and occasionally beauty, which is itself an impressive feat even if nothing in the movie actually works as intended.

could've been a fascinating piece of auteurist self-criticism if marie had said something about malcolm being incapable of subtext. zendaya does some of the best non-verbal acting i've ever seen, it's a shame the movie is so incredibly verbal.

the first two segments were the most entertaining but i was finding the coen's typical cheery nihilism rather tiring. then when the third segment hit and i realized it was all just about individuals (or in the case of the fifth and sixth segment, collectives) trying to make their own path in the world against the negative forces of humanity and nature, everything suddenly kinda clicked into place for me. basically a typical coen bros' film
