I have spent a truly embarrassing number of hours trying to put into words why I love this movie so much, its portrayal of journalism prioritizing profit over ethics, or the American military as consistently disinterested in the loss of civilian life, or tech billionaires putting the world at risk for their own ego trips, or Batman as a symbol of American righteous fury against an alien immigrant following a large scale tragedy in a major metropolis (Metropolis), or Superman’s struggles to grapple with the extended impact of international intervention, or the discussion of the inherent immoralising nature of power, or, or, or. but the truth is I’m not thinking of any of this when I watch it. I’m just totally rapt with attention and moved by the images and sounds, the way I should be with any film of any merit. this thing moves me man, and for all the essays I’ve read and words I’ve spilled, I still can’t quite find an honest explanation for why. it’s certainly not perfect, it’s got some wild quirks and is transparently intended as a middle chapter in a longer story that may never see true conclusion (though recent news makes my heart swell), but I’m glad it’s here so it can move me again the next time, and the time after that.
