my favorite of the 3 almodovar dramas i've seen, but i continue to question his writing; i never find the way tragic events unfold to be at all natural, and i often see his plot devices as forced, as well as how his actors behave in response to them. however, "all about my mother" had some serious issues regarding tone but the tonal switches in this don't feel as whiplashy.
this also contains my favorite shot in any of his movies, a 2-second shot of the wind blowing two dumpsters down a brick road which should have been at least a minute longer
if you've seen this, you've seen the birth of modern alt-comedy at least 20 years before it broke. zach galifianakis's voice-raising and antagonizing, tim and eric's making fun of amateur singers, PFFR's fucking with the viewers, eric andre's anti-interviews, this has it all.
