Honestly, I love this. I love the puns, I love how fun it is, I love how the sets look so much like sets but also like toys, I love that it really is a live-action cartoon. I adore Uma Thurman. I also don't care in the least how faithful it is or not to the source material. I don't care how it fits with other adaptions and don't care to compare it. This is great stuff by itself. Absolute camp.
It's strange to think that it came out only 4 years after The Exorcist. For one, Linda Blair looks completely different. A whole other person. And also. The themes about going to back, trying to recapture, and reliving the past film feel like something of a much later sequel. Especially nowadays when sequels and reboots to decades-old properties are so common.
The theme of trying to recreate something past is also this film's virtue and downfall. It's about the futility…
