Favorite films are the last films I watched/re-watched that I rated 5 stars
Perhaps a little too reliant on score, but the performances are all excellent, all perfectly tuned to how normal and stressful a Jewish family event like this feels. For as much of this is about kind of having a panic attack, I was struck by how tender and emotionally earned the ending is, a gentle landing.
So goofy and ambitious, really just incredible genuine nerdiness going on here! Galactic world-building, featuring battles in deep space and downtown Chicago. The first and only movie in the Jupiter Ascending franchise. Love is about flying through the air, holding on to your person!
v hard to participate in genocide and confront that fact bc then what if u feel bad about it after and repress the memory and then make an aestheticised animated version of that act of remembering that conceals your actions and responsibilities in artistic ways and then you gain international acclaim for the film of your shallow self critique :(
so hard :(
The scene in the dressing room when Jolson puts on blackface and then has an emotional conversation with his girlfriend and his mother is utterly baffling and bizarre no matter how many times I see it. Blackface gives him some kind of emotional access to sadness, while also alerting us to his modernity. Also further troubling when you realize he's performing minstrelsy every time he sings a song "jazzy," it's only at the emotional moments that he's in blackface!
