I have a wild theory about this film.
Is this movie about toxic suppressed sexuality?
Pattinson's character was in love with the man that he killed, he's riddled with guilt and grief. Dafoe's character is an older version of Pattinson, hence why they're both called Thomas, they're the same person! The mermaid is symbolic, a cover up for his true sexuality, hence the anger/resentment towards her. The kissing scene between Pattinson and Dafoe could ellude to self love and the disgust/denial of it. The light at the end could symbolise the truth about his sexuality, a liberation so powerful that it ultimately destroys him.
Or I'm reading too much into it and it's just two drunk horny tossers stuck on an island? Either way, masterpiece! 9.5/10
