Garner Montgomery’s review published on Letterboxd:
The Departed might be Martin Scorsese’s best film. I say ‘might’ because I genuinely don’t know for sure because the competition is ridiculously heavy. Yet this film stands out from the rest for one simple reason. All of Scorsese’s other films are dynamic character pieces with light plot. The Departed is plot-focused with dynamic characters.
As a story, The Departed is an exhilarating and tightly-paced cat-and-mouse thriller that takes the formula of another film and enriches it with an electric cast and some of Scorsese’s finest directing moments.
Sometimes the Academy does get it right.
