attempts to handle real and gritty (in quotation marks) subject matter with a off-putting mix of poor humour, shallow cynicism and sentimentality. the sexual violence feels especially repulsive in a script too superficial and ideologically confused to handle any of its own themes with dignity. i did appreciate that the casting of non-actors made the kids seem genuinely vulnerable, confused, and inscrutable.
the punk shows were the highlight and rare enjoyable moments, and the fights were staged pretty well. worth watching for the visual capture of early-80s punk
