attempts to handle real and gritty (in quotation marks) subject matter with a off-putting mix of poor humour, shallow cynicism and sentimentality. the sexual violence feels especially repulsive in a script too superficial and ideologically confused to handle any of its own themes with dignity. i did appreciate that the casting of non-actors made the kids seem genuinely vulnerable, confused, and inscrutable.
