It's stupid how many times I thought something was wrong when the sound stopped for the narrator to speak.
I went swimming in a pool with literally one fucking leaf in it and yet my first thought was still 'god this is just like that one scene in y tu mamá también' help me
Devastating. I found myself tearing up when they finally reach the ocean. The movie captures that magical feeling you get when it feels like the whole world stopped spinning just for you. That feeling, when you have it, provides such relief. But it ends, of course, and the film pushes you back into reality in a way that is so deft and honest. It ends with everything piling up at once and leaves you paying the bill, still grappling with the feelings you never asked for in the first place.

Sex; it’s sticky, it’s embarrassing and – even in these enlightened days of liberalism and pornography at the click of a button – it’s treated like some sort of shameful taboo by a large chunk of society. There are people out there who think sex is dirty and nasty and inherently bad. You know the type of people I mean; bible-belt housewives, religious zealots and angry old men who are so sexually deprived that they simply hate the idea…
so, the two teenagers have a manifesto. the woman has a manifesto. everyone has a manifesto. let's see about this film's manifesto.
Rule 1: there are two boys and a woman. boys love girls. girls love boys. boys love boys. don't worry about it.
Rule 2: the country side is hot and expansive and your car is so small and limited. you stare out the glass and try to understand. don't think too hard.
Rule 3: don't ask the woman you've tricked into coming along on a road-trip to a beach you've made up too many questions. you don't want to know.
Rule 4: there are also things even your best friend doesn't need to know. bury your resentment of…
Diego Luna and Gael Garciá Bernal are babies in this. It’s been years and years since I’ve seen this, and it was jarring seeing them so young.
Speaking of how long it’s been since I originally saw this movie, this is so much better than I remembered! In my head this was like a steamy road movie between three supermodels that is very serious and sexy and kind of boring. But watching it now, Gael and Diego are kind of dorks, and Maribel Verdú is awkward, and it’s got almost a Wes Anderson comedic vibe going on. The whole thing is weirder and much funnier than I thought it was. To be honest, my girlfriend at the time, now wife,…
This movie ages like fine wine and each time I revisit it, I learn more and see more
Yeah... Life really is like that sometimes.
Curon manages to weave the individuals perspective with that of a changing nation. He creates allegories between teenage boys turning into men and the political change of the time, he shows us the whole spectrum of a country the rich and the poor, what their lives will be and not be. All meanwhile forming a narrative which is an ode to life itself.
Yeah... Films really are like that sometimes.
An unapologetically graphic film that pulls you into the promiscuous lives of two Mexican boys who still have some growing up to do. The overwhelming amount of graphic content is jarring at times, but it's done as a way to fully strip back these characters to understand exactly who they are and what they're trying to learn. It's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, and understandably so, but this is a coming-of-age film that tackles topics with such unfiltered language that other movies don't dare touch.
