Amazing. It’s like La Notte set in the twilight zone. Well, worse really seeing how this is a reality for so many people. Don’t even know how Kachyňa made it out alive after dropping this tbh. God this movie is unsettling, not just on a fundamental level, but in the way the central relationship is portrayed. They go through every scathing emotion and it doesn’t let up. Jiřina Bohdalová is especially incredible as Anna, what a firecracker of a performance.
Still being mind blown by the amount of range that the Czech New Wave had, and wondering why it’s not as revered as it should be. From the stuff I’ve seen, I’ve gotten this, simple coming of age films, a space thriller, surrealist comedies, surrealist horror, and best of all, an avant-garde historical epic - and I’ve barely even scratched the surface.
