Was trying to figure out if I should watch this or Missing Link. Ya know what? I'm gonna leave it at that.

Some of the technical elements don’t hold up as well the second time, but others shine. I was expecting to like it a lot less on rewatch but I found it to be similarly effective and somewhat less frustrating (although I’m still not a fan of the excruciating torture scenes in the last act). Would still recommend for horror fans who can withstand some pretty extreme imagery and themes.

it’s hard to ignore the undercurrent of misogyny in the third act, but Martyrs is arguably a modern horror classic from the new french extremity movement. if you’re cool with extremely disturbing gore and violence then check it out! if not, i recommend staying at least 300 feet away from this film at all times.

i don't even know how to rate this. i don't even know what to say. i'm in absolute shock, terrified to my core. i don't know what i was expecting, but it wasn't that. pure horror. i'm gonna have nightmares tonight.

Unquestionably living up to its notorious reputation as being one of the more distinctively grim films apart of the New French Extremity movement, Martyrs definitely is quite a particularly bleak and relatively effective horror feature that adequately maintains a plentiful amount of unpredictability and ingenuity throughout its runtime to undoubtedly make the film itself more than worthwhile.

Though there are a few specific problems in the latter half of the film that keep this one from being collectively top-notch as a whole since it leans into being more repetitive than engaging, Martyrs still remains a reasonably striking film all around despite the distasteful subject matter that it devotedly tackles in the process.

It's so good, but I would never EVER recommend people watch it. Stay away from this movie at all costs.

Visually arresting French horror with something to say.

I was very impressed by this film, not only because of the incredible make-up effects which are truly horrifying at times, but also because of the way it is scripted. It manages to do something new with the genre and it cleverly and slowly unfolds an original plot which never ceased to intrigue me.

Yes, this is a relentless and disturbing film and certainly not for everyone. I never found it gratuitous, however, which often isn't the case in films like this.

Don’t expect to be brought into contact with something there is little supply of by announcing that you’re doing it. A new favorite movie.

one of the sickest films I had ever seen. Was it supposed to be an horror movie? just torture and torture and more torture! that's all.

Sono senza parole. Mai visto un horror più spaventoso, inquietante, cattivo, disturbato, e con una trama davvero insolita. L'unica similitudine che mi viene in mente, di fronte a tanta scientifica e sistematica crudeltà, è l'infamia della sperimentazione sugli animali.

Bellissimo film che colpisce duramente e in profondità. Ovviamente non è per tutti.

I actually really liked the first half of this, I actually found it to be really powerful, then the mid way twist happens and this turns into the dumbest thing I've ever seen that clearly thinks of itself as genius.

I get it, I really do, it just is not very good and honestly ruins every aspect of the movie I actually liked.

what a movie! i will now never watch it again

Two scary things crossed my mind:
1. What happened in the film could have happened or is happening to someone somewhere.
2. I was not disturbed watching this.

I consider myself someone with a very high tolerance for gore and explicit imagery. Martyrs took me by surprise by making me squirm several times throughout, even though I expected to be disturbed.

The film succeeds where so many others fail because the subjects of the unrelenting torture aren’t puppets. They’re not just there as a canvas for the director to abuse - Laurier makes you care which, of course, only amplifies the horrifying experience of watching Martyrs.

4 stars not because I liked it but because I was impressed.
