The Criterion Challenge 2021 (Original list here)
30. Black and White
A trip through the limits of sanity, the fringes of consciousness that did not need Preston Sturges to defend its status as art. A dirty bomb of Freudian damage, paranoia, and libidinal frustration whose artistic and thematic shrapnel can be found embedded in Psycho, Forbidden Planet, Peeping Tom, The Blob, Vertigo, Elevator to the Gallows, Twin Peaks and Primal Fear. A space where your internality is but the sum total of your past horrors, and your externality is a constant reflection of them; you exist only to wreak havoc as you seek to extirpate them from your being, one by one.
But, do you really hate the damage caused to you by your traumas? Do you really wish to be rid of them? Or have they merely become a convenient excuse for you to do all the things you've always wanted to do?
