My first Paul Bartel, and definitely won't be my last, as this was a legit unique blast. The kind of ambitious WTF exploitation masterpiece that Tarantino's films seem to be mythologizing about, so wild and tonally manic, mean-spirited action and pop art spectacles raining down on everything.
Weirdly reminding me of a mix between Turkey Shoot and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, we're taken to the death races of the future, where a cast of gritty and cartoony characters duke it out till they kick the bucket.
Some evil violence, nice gore, a bonkers plot, and my favourite - a hilarious David Carradine - all make up for a decent time.
Need another viewing of this one as I felt my brain running out of gas towards the end. I can only take so much vehicular madness before I just wish I was back in grade 8 playing Twisted Metal instead of watching this. Ah well. There will be more.
