Cartagena. 2009. Directed Alain Monne.
“Cartagena” is shot in Bolivar, Columbia and the cast switch between Spanish and French effortlessly. This sad, poetic story has Sophie Marceau (Muriel) and Christopher Lambert (Leo) who were partners at the time in real life. However, in this film Muriel is a tetraplegic who needs around the clock care and Leo is an ex-boxer with zero caregiving skills yet he needs a job badly. Muriel reluctantly hires him. Over time Leo takes her out to smell, hear, and taste the beauty of Columbia a rare treat as other caregivers could not persuade her to leave her room. Needless to say, Muriel and Leo fall in love but, is this a sustainable love that can stand the test of time and Leo’s past. Alain Monne directed Sophie Marceau and Christopher Lambert in an elegant style. This isn’t an average rom-com. It is a gritty love story that need to be told.
