Krudt, knald og kællinger
Angie Dickinson sizzles on screen as Wilma McClatchie; a hardworking single mother turned bootlegger turned bank robber turned outlaw. She's tired of living in poverty. She wants the best for her two daughters. She might not be the Big Bad Wolf, but you don't want to mess with Big Bad Mama. It's a Roger Corman produced, b-movie cult classic, featuring car chases, shootouts, Captain Kirk, Dallas from Alien, amazing nakedness, and Dick fuckin' Miller. Perhaps, it's also a satirical look at the politics of the Great Depression, and a character study of the empowerment of women? Whatever the case, it's fun as hell, and a blast to watch.
I've always been an admirer of Angie Dickinson. My first exposure was…
"Never trust a girl giving her donuts away for free"
- Billy Jean
Man oh man, Angie Dickinson kicks some ass in this movie. From taking over her dead husband's moonshine business to robbing banks to kidnapping high-society chicks, she does it all. All alongside her two "innocent" little daughters Billy Jean and Polly, who don't seem to mind at all, following their mom into madness.
Tom Skerritt as Fred is probably the opposite of Warren Beatty in Bonnie and Clyde, as Fred is the impersonation of the "loverboy"(he loves screwin') , a term Clyde rejected of being on multiple occasions. Other than that, this flick is full of B&C references, especially that last shootout scene pays tribute to it.
All in all, What a goddamn enjoyable movie. Also: Is there anyone as classy as William Shatner, when it comes to robbing millionaires?
List: Sexploitation Essentials
Angie Dickenson is game for Big Bad Mama, even baring her all, for art.
A larky affair, Depression era crime-comedy-cum-sexploitation, produced by Roger Corman, it’s a quality one banged out on the presumed cheap.
Big Bad Mama takes her sexually naive, precocious teens, Susan Sennett and Robbie Lee (both very good, btw), on a tear upending banks, an American Legion party, a seedy preacher, as well as the well-heeled. She teaches them a liberated, libertine way of living, having a hoot and a holler all the while.
Frankly, I could have liked it turning a little darker, as there is neither danger nor threat throughout. I feel like Robert Altman or Jonathan Demme could’ve turned this into something more, though it’s certainly fun and ribald.
“I just never felt the titties of a millionaire before.”
I never knew how little I needed to see William Shatner in a fully nude sex scene over breakfast until this morning. Watching the Shat awkwardly trying to hide his dick behind Angie Dickinson while he painfully attempts to avoid touching her boobs is a pitiful and deeply sad sight to behold, and begs the question.... has William Shatner ever had sex?
Dickinson is a trooper though, her facial expression demonstrates how confused she is with his on-screen lovemaking technique, but she soldiers through like the professional she is and makes the scene work.
Other things happen in this movie.
I liked it.
Part of my Double Feature Challenge
As a birthday treat to myself, I watched the "Grindhouse Experience" version of of this "Cult Classics Double Feature" from producer Roger Corman. In addition to the two films, it contained trailers for similar films that would have been released between 1974 and 1987, plus a Coca-Cola sponsored concession stand advertisement between features, just like 40 years ago.
The first feature, "Big Bad Mama," was surprisingly better than expected. I had hoped to see a bit of Angie Dickinson in various stages of undress, but her full frontal nudity was a total treat. At 40 years of age, the "Police Woman" TV star put the younger actresses to shame ... one big, bad, hot…
Fun and trashy Depressionsploitation Bonnie & Clyde knockoff from producer Roger Corman. Aggressively episodic but well-acted throughout and beautifully shot in parts. My biggest complaint is that I never, ever wanted to see that much of William Shatner.
Breasts, bullets, and blood by way of bootlegging and bank robbing. A Corman cross of Bonnie and Clyde and softcore porn.
"The road to damnation is paved with whiskey bottles!"
"Must be hell on tires."
I don't know my way around hicksploitation all that well but I've had my hand in some trash. I think Big Bad Mama is special. It's that sweet spot between righteousness and sleaze. It spins a yarn of feminine self-actualization and shows us all the tits in the process. The plot could be the plot of a porno, which it kind of is, but it could also be the plot of a serious mid-70's crime film about a woman who will do anything to lift her daughters out of the muck and into a world beyond constant dread and disappointment. Which it kind of is. Angie…

JUNE: Ladies Kickin' Ass (BONUS)
Sexploitation and feminism make fine bedfellows in this slice of Depression-era redneck mayhem. Angie Dickinson struts her stuff as Wilma McClatchie, certified sexpot and dedicated mother of horny teens Susan Sennett (The Candy Snatchers) and Robbie Lee (Switchblade Sisters). After the feds kill her bootlegger boyfriend, she turns to a life of crime to keep her family afloat, in a loose series of episodes that invariably end with the McClatchies speeding away, Tommy guns blazing and banjo music blaring. With their reputation expanding by the job, they move quickly from running moonshine to bank robberies, fleecing sham preacher Royal Dano, knocking over a horse racing operation, invading a…
Chaotic as all hell, and a really insane film overall. It’s not groundbreaking or anything, but it’s a good time regardless. It’s like the meth head version of Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Pretty good ending too! Strong 6!
Gotta say that this was a good bit better than I was expecting it to be. Kinda reminded me of the Dukes Of Hazzard a bit with the law breaking shenanigans except more R rated. Got a kick out of Shatner showing up to play the genteel southern boyfriend but really the two sisters stole the show. I'll be checking out the sequel even though I doubt it will be as good.
An essential '70s New World drive-in classic and revisited now in honor of the late, great Dick Miller. The beloved character actor has a pretty sizable role here as a hapless FBI agent perpetually one step behind Depression-era outlaw Wilma McClatchie (Angie Dickinson). Notable at the time for some gratuitous Dickinson nudity that made it a cable favorite throughout the '80s (William Shatner also gets naked, and Tom Skerritt gets more ass than a toilet seat, bedding Dickinson and both of her daughters, played by Susan Sennett and Robbie Lee), it's a more lighthearted, T&A take on Roger Corman's BLOODY MAMA with Shelley Winters. Producer Corman would rehash the same story again the next year with Cloris Leachman in Jonathan Demme's much more sanitized, PG-rated CRAZY MAMA, and despite the finality of BIG BAD MAMA's ending, Dickinson would return for the belated 1987 sequel BIG BAD MAMA II.
There needs to be a modern remake of this. A Fast and Furious meets Hustlers vibe.
This film feels more of a Russ Meyer-film,thanks to numerous T&A-scenes than recently deceased Steve Carver's film. Also if this had been Russ Meyer's film it might have been actually funny.
Very entertaining. It’s a crime spree road movie that highlights the bond between a mother and her daughters. It gingerly touches on national politics, as well as the personal politics between humans. Lots of stunts and fun, and Angie Dickinson is great.
Got that Corman Energy. Also literally is 84 minutes. Also a God Shatner performance where he gets to do some good shouting and crazy guy acting
If you ever wanted to see Angie Dickinson have sex with Captain Kirk, then this classic trash is for you. A Corman-produced period piece cashing in on the success of Bonnie and Clyde, Dickinson plays a depression-era single mother dreaming of riches. Along with her two daughters (and eventually two male partners), she goes from bootlegging to bank robbing to national fame. Even though there are a few appreciated barbs at capitalism, the script is generally pure junk food. This is trash par excellence, moving from between sex and violence with a lightning pace. While the supporting cast includes Tom Skerritt, William Shatner, and cult favorites Susan Sennett (The Candy Snatchers), Robbie Lee (Switchblade Sisters) and Dick Miller, this is Dickinson’s show all the way. She brings gusto to her strong willed and independent matriarch role, handling a tommy gun with ease and also giving some choice nude scenes showing off her amazing forty-something body.
Hell yes this film is Dillenger meets Switchblade Sisters and it even has the girl from Switchblade Sisters. Mama and her daughters are three very attractive woman. Plenty of tits, ass, and bank robbin.
in this bonnie & clydesploitation battle between original series star trek and original movie alien for the heart of angie dickinson, "motherfuckin" skerritt pulls through with the narrow victory. about as much fun as it's possible to have with 1hr25min and an amazon prime sub
It's certainly got its charms. But I'm not sure it's got enough of them if the audience isn't already a Corman/Angie Dickinson/B-movie fan.
Found this gem on Prime.
Wow, what a fun ride. Not much meat on this bone but Angie Dickinson does a great job in this Bonnie and Clyde like movie! Also, did I mention William Shatner!!!!
A late arrival riding on the cattails of Bonnie and Clyde. This is trash, but has some interesting bits. The class dynamics between Skerritt and Shatner's characters and how they approach making money is the stuff that could make for a better movie if better developed.
