Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy ★★★★

The summer has finally graced us with something else that's good.

I thought this was going to suck from the opening scene, because it was terribly clichéd, felt half-assed with the direction, and poorly acted by the kid (I know, he's a kid so it's not that big of a deal). But I'm just being truthful. In fact, a lot of the story was fairly weak and underwhelming to me. The characters, individually, are not all that compelling. They try to give an emotional punch to each of them for their motives and it just didn't work for me that well. Maybe it's because we've seen it done a million times before, the way they did it? I'm not quite sure; but, then again, there is only so many ways to do it, I guess. I just get tired of certain tropes.

Collectively, though, the array of characters works marvelously: the movie is energetic and at its best when the group is all onscreen together. When they're not, it falls kind of flat. Even the villain wasn't that captivating and was too generic for my liking. Probably the weakest aspect of the entire film, which usually causes everything else to suffer because of it.

But James Gunn managed to steer the ship in the right direction despite the weak spots.

On top of everything negative aforementioned, it was still a fun-filled CGI splendor of explosive space action and a full spectrum of eye-popping, cosmic colors. However, the thing keeping me from giving this three stars instead of four is this: the comedy. Easily the funniest Marvel film ever and one of their strongest and most entertaining because of that.

Marvel wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary, in terms of their current formula, with this cast and it worked. Chris Pratt did really great, I thought, giving certain scenes their much-needed flare, but the real star of the film was Rocket Raccoon. He steals the show. Cooper did an outstanding job giving him life and I feel he had the best writing to work with. Drax (Bautista surprisingly did a good job) and Groot (some really awesome moments, one of which might be the funniest in the whole film) were both funny as fuck in their own rights, too. And I actually didn't hate Zoe Saldana in a movie for once. But Rocket was just too fucking hilarious. The comedic timing in the film is damn near perfect. The audience stayed bursting with laughter almost the entire duration of the film. Countless moments of hilarity. The comedic elements elevated everything . And that's why the film worked so well.

But the best part of it all? The soundtrack. It's not even close. It is fucking fantastic. Timeless hits that give the entire film a feel-good vibe throughout. Amazing selection of songs that I love.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a change from the typical superhero movies we've come to expect--with some things that have been exhaustively overdone, as well--but it's a good type of different, for the most part. It's the best comedy of the year (although I haven't seen too many this year, to be honest).

James Gunn gives us a galactic adventure that pleases on most fronts.

P.S. Stay after the credits to see the most interesting and unexpected cameo in Marvel history. It might hold that title for a long time.
