I would be lying if I said Eros + Massacre wasn’t a challenging film. It is 100% a challenge, and I can’t say I have ever seen something quite like it. It’s long, it’s philosophical, it’s visually experimental, and honestly it deals with a lot of historical material that the average viewer wouldn’t have any grasp on. It tells the story of Osugi Sakae — an anarchist and radical thinker of the early 20th century — as well as his…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Entrancing, meditative, emotionally devastating, I had high hopes for Drive My Car but no disappointments. Although the film is filled with long scenes, repetitions, silences, three hours seemed to fly by effortlessly, all the details assembling into a conclusion that would have brought me to tears if I were one to cry at movies. I am spoiler tagging this review, just because I have details I want to discuss and I’m glad I went in without much knowledge of the…

A really beautiful exploration of loneliness, disillusionment, and anonymity within the city. I only wish it was about half the length, it feels like a project better suited to 45 minutes or so, rather than 90 minutes. Still I overall enjoyed it, I think it speaks to the experiences of anyone far from home at a young age, and those experiences of detachment, isolation, and uncertainty.

Yeah I understand the cultural relevance of this one, but I could not bring myself to care about this film's characters much if not at all. The protagonist is really flat and inserted into a really barebones plot, and even for something under 90 min it feels like it doesn't justify its time. The result is a fairly generic teen movie, in which nothing really happens. I think it would seem far more significant in its own time, but in…

Marcell Jankovics is perhaps better known for Son of the White Mare, but that doesn't make The Tragedy of Man any less a feat of animation. Clocking in at nearly three hours, the film was apparently in production for over twenty years and it's quite apparent why. It by no means cuts any corners with its artwork, combining a variety of styles that are all incredibly rich and visually striking. The story itself is based upon a 19th century Hungarian…

A film with really fantastic performances, fantastic sets, fantastic costumes. I only wish I had been able to connect with it a bit more, I wasn't able to become fully absorbed in it and as a result I occasionally struggled with the plot. Still a joy to watch though, the theater scenes are so much fun and I have so much respect and admiration for its production.
