Stage Door

Stage Door ★★★★

Stage Door manages to marry snappy, bright comedy (in the vein of The Women or Dinner at Eight) and interesting female characters with a last-act twist that heightens the drama and leads to a satisfying conclusion. As the co-leads, Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers play off of each other expertly: Terry and Jean may bicker incessantly, but they grow to have genuine affection for one another. The film doesn’t shy away from the cutthroat backstage politics of Broadway in all their tragedy and triumph…Terry’s curtain call speech may be one of the most poignant illustrations of it in cinema.
