This is like the result of the darkest timeline of a Florida State film bro getting into Wong Kar-wai and other arthouse films and deciding to make a movie that filters those influences, without any of the grace or freshness of a Barry Jenkins. And that's putting it lightly.

I clocked the path of misery porn that this film was set to go down on pretty quickly, so yes it didn't take very long for me to turn on it. But even then I was still insanely unprepared for how cynical and vile this film was going to be. Each dramatic turn is even further emphasized in its fraudulence by every single aspect of the filmmaking. The dialogue, the characters, the camerawork, the aspect ratios, the music choices. It's all completely phony and spurious and made me more angry than I've been at a film in a long time. I'll give props to Lucas Hedges for being the only person involved in this whole thing to provide even an ounce of humanity.

The halfway point of this is easily the closest I've ever come to walking out of a film. But a part of me just had to keep watching to see how this shit-show reached its idiotic denouement.
