    I admire Neil Jordan's enthusiasm for telling stories about marginalised people, but he has a very strange way of going about it. Who do you cast as the POV character for a film about a queer black sex worker? Why, Bob Hoskins of course!

    Still, it's not badly-made - in fact on on most levels it's terrific. And I really don't want to take anything away from Bob Hoskins, he should have beaten Paul Newman to that Oscar. Heck knows…

    LA: Winona is miscast here but no less iconic for it. That is a Look. And hey, we got a Rowlands/Ryder two-hander, who can really complain about that?

    NY: Fine, just fine, but I assume this scene takes place in a New York taxi several time a night. 

    Paris: Got an Ivorian playing an Ivorian but a sighted person playing a blind woman, so not ideal, but it’s the most “shit that cabbies put up with” of the lot, so…
