Nick Direso’s review published on Letterboxd:
I thought this movie was pandering garbage. It's such an incredible and interesting story about black women doing excellent things amid extreme adversity. I feel the filmmakers cut out anything that could possibly be controversial or interesting and just made a movie for the sake of getting some awards love. There's barely any conflict in this movie. Every character arc felt like this to me:
Black Character: I want to be a (insert profession)!
White Character: No!
Black Character: Come on!
White Character: Alright.
I don't feel like the filmmakers were as connected to the source material as I was, and all I did was read a Wikipedia page for a few minutes before watching the damn movie.
