Pretty much all of the child actors were terrible. It felt like I was watching an oddly dark middle school play. Also, the pacing was off and there was very little character development. It didn't look good either, as they were on a rushed shooting schedule and it showed.
This movie has a ton of visual appeal, there’s just no real substance or interesting characters. Also, and maybe it’s just my untrained American ears, but much of the music was like nails on a chalkboard to me. This is not an ideal development for an operetta. Very difficult to watch.
I thought this movie was pandering garbage. It's such an incredible and interesting story about black women doing excellent things amid extreme adversity. I feel the filmmakers cut out anything that could possibly be controversial or interesting and just made a movie for the sake of getting some awards love. There's barely any conflict in this movie. Every character arc felt like this to me:
Black Character: I want to be a (insert profession)!
White Character: No!
Black Character: Come…
It’s like Crash, but with 80% more self-important white characters! This movie is primarily a groan inducing cheese factory, but Kasdan will occasionally have a line, scene, or shot that’s outstanding. You can still see plenty of good even when he’s bad. But at the end of the day, it’s still pretty bad.
