This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

not really /spoiling/ but fuck you how does this go from being one of the most watchable and enjoyable miniseries i've seen in a minute to going brain-death-dumb in the last half hour it's been 18 hours and I still cannot process this I am MAD
legit 4/4.5 start stuff to about a 2 in a matter of MINUTES

    #23 in David Lynch

wow, soured on this a bunch tbh, lot of waste on lynch's side, sloppy narrative and below his formal standards (though there's some excellent shots here, especially dern's abortion); feels so up in the air and mixed together with such a frustrating lack of cohesiveness other than cage and dern's chemistry. obviously dafoe is really great, as is sherilyn fenn's scene, but so much of this movie just kind of floats and feels like nothing?

for all the fire though, cage is totally electric. one of his best performances for sure.

Had no clue Winona Ryder's character in this was called Lydia and I watched it the same day I publicly start using Lydia as my name

Keaton, Ryder, and Burton's stop motion infatuation are the obvious MVPs but they're kind of... by and by the only things I really liked about this? maybe a pipe bursting in our house mid-way through didn't help but I was just kind of waiting for it to... get good. Love the spirit but, like, Burton's done it better elsewhere. Cool worm though and I'll never complain about Geena Davis

    You win this round Flannigan
I don't think this ever actually hooked me but this has a great sense of momentum and flow even when falling victim to plenty of lengthy didactic & dialectic discussions, often full of exposition, because the actual premise is pretty sorta neat; better yet, original, and therefore it's way harder to predict where a lot of it might necessarily go. There's a mix of characters, some good, some…

rewatched for Hooptober '21: They Came By Night

think my problem with this at the end of the day is just that it's at 11/10 energy and intensity for literally every minute of the movie; plus for the first half to be, basically, a bruce campbell solo show (fantastic idea in theory) in which he's mostly just yelling make it quite the endurance test for lack of a better term.
great, funny ideas though. love the hand! the groovy! super praisable, not very watchable to me and my teeny tiny brain.
