While previous Ozu movies had Ozuian elements to varying degrees The Only Son is the film where the Ozu style finally bloomed into life. Ozu regular Chôko Iida is superb as the mother who visits her son in the city whom she worked tirelessly for so he could get an education and a good job only to find him struggling to make ends meet in depression-era Tokyo.

Perhaps the supreme exemplar of screwball comedy, it's endlessly witty script is bolstered by Powell and Lombard both in top form and an immaculate supporting cast. The opening credits are phenomenal and the closing line is worthy of Wilder.
