60-odd minutes of shots around the Hotel Monterey, silent, with only occasional humans is not really everybody's cup of tea, and I wasn't sure it was going to be mine, but there's something in this film that resonated with the apocalyptic loneliness of Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Marc Isaacs' contrasting LIFT, and Akerman's own negotiation of belonging to a place in NO HOME MOVIE. (This is only my third Akerman, so there's probably a lot more parallels throughout her career.) That could be another way of saying that the text is so open that what you bring to it defines the value; certainly, it's as far away from a film I'd force on anybody as any film I've ever liked. But in a late at night, alone kind of mood, it has its intoxicating passages.
