Spencer

Spencer ★★★

100-word review: Between this and Jackie, it seems clear that director Pablo Larraín has come upon his operative niche to success: mannered, unhurried, and introspective biopic character studies of tragic women within the royal or political margins, scrutinised through the public magnifying glass. Spencer very much is Jackie taken a step further, and like with Portman in 2016, it revolves around Stewarts pivotal performance, whose enacted mania is aided by the unnerving jazz score and (dazzling) drone and tracking shots. It's a bit forcefully artsy, and some scenes appear specifically tailored (pun intended) to lock in a Best Costume Design Oscar nod.
