Hammer of the Gods

Hammer of the Gods

I won’t beat around the bush. ‘Hammer of the Gods’ was a slog. A dull and infuriating slog. It takes a subject matter I am interested in and delivers it in such a tedious manner that I contemplated turning it off at least once every minute of its runtime. For some reason the creators felt that our Viking protagonists needed to spout phrases such as “Go fuck yourself” or that their poorly choreographed fight sequence would go down a treat with a dubstep score…. I…. I Just…. Ugh. This film drove me to the edge of my patience and then chucked me off. The characters spent half the film walking from one place to the next and that was probably my favourite part. The scenery and backdrops to the story are often beautiful to look at but once the films characters start talking it all falls apart. Visually the film is fine; the script however was a horrendous bore with the acting suitably awful for the material they have been given. The last third of the film did become oddly entertainingly in its awfulness. It was like a violent episode of a soap opera with each plot twist more hilarious than the last. By the time the credits rolled however I was sat shaking my head and laughing to myself at the fact that I had actually finished it. I shouldn't feel proud of myself for sitting through another terrible film but in a strange way I do.
