David James’s review published on Letterboxd:
Watched with kiddo, hadn't seen this since I was a kid myself. Wow, this movie is beautiful. Well, the brief cgi hasn't aged well at all, but the backdrops and character animation are gorgeous. The songs still aren't a patch on Little Mermaid though. Plot is fine but Gaston is a great bad guy - he really helps crystalize the feminism of the story.
It's funny, we were about to watch the new version with Hermoine, until we realized it's over 45 minutes longer - what the heck?! I can't imagine adding 50% more runtime could possibly improve this. In fact, one of the great strengths of classic Disney animated features is their ability to tell a grand story full of fun and music in under 90 minutes. A massively budgeted update on this lovely little movie clocking in at 2 hours and 17 minutes seems emblematic of modern blockbuster bloat.
