Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One

    ★★★★

Another solid entry in the DCAU, there's been a general uptick in quality to these things the last year or so. This seems to be a great adaptation of the original comic (I haven't read it, but it feels true). There's some really great images in this, and the movie looks beautiful in its production design. The identity of the Holiday Killer doesn't pique my interest, but the world building for this one is pretty great, and the characters are…

    Dance, Girl, Dance

    ★★★

There's some stuff in this that works, and then some stuff that just doesn't, ending up with a slightly odd film. Lucille Ball is the highlight, she brightens up every scene she's in and helps give some energy to the proceedings, plus she's just plain funny. Maureen O'Hara does an okay job with the material she is given. The male romantic interests are mostly an afterthought, weird to have the subplot with the divorced couple. The back story to the movie is also interesting, with the one studio director that was a woman at the time, Dorothy Arzner, having directed this.

    Autumn Sonata

A great, great film. Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice is my pick for the best all-time performance by an actress, but I think now Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann in Autumn Sonata are my picks for the 2nd and 3rd best. Their performances are astounding. The Bergman films I've seen so far all pretty much have great female performances, but in Autumn Sonata (Ingrid) Bergman and Ullmann bring a level of talent and emotional realism to the performances that just…

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

    ★★★

A lesser effort from what I thought was his groundbreaking Sin City, the almost 10 years in between dulls Sin City 2's possible impact. Doesn't contain the better material of the original. Also not as visually interesting, though some shots still were able to stand out. Rodriguez doesn't use color as well as in the original. Bruce Willis' presence in the movie is a mistake, I think; it just feels too tacked on and doesn't match the tone of the…
