The Power of the Dog begins as a story about such inner termoils but goes to the extremes that, while not expected from the outset, are necessary to transcend this story from a predictable, uninsightful assessment of its subject to being an emotionally resonant tale that pushes to extremes beyond the typical audience comfort level that you might expect at first glance.
