Watching movies for inspiration for making movies but watching a lot more movies than I make. A vicious cycle, honestly.

Better than I remember. Definitely 14-year old core. Ridiculously efficient filmmaking with shot compositions and editing that feels antithetical to how any other filmmaker would approach the material. Carpenter movies truly age like wine. Better and better each time.

Captures the horror of war more effectively than I anticipated. Seeing this as an adult I am realizing just how little attention I paid to a majority of the plot as a kid. Robot fights rule but so do conflicted protagonists and fleshed out antagonist. Char is the epitome of antagonists who gain more popularity than their rival and it's easy to see why. He's so damn cool. But Amuro is good too. Brilliant color use, with some gorgeous moments that look like paintings meant for a museum. For something made out of a bunch of episodes, they really stitched together a great piece of art.

Tony operating at next-level genius director capacity while also hitting some of the highest emotional peaks of his career. Denzel is the perfect collaborator and vessel for him, truly channeling a level of professionalism with blue collar relatability and charisma like none other. Supporting cast is filled with absolute killer performances. No one else could've executed this movie in this form, and I feel any other attempts would've been completely unengaging or incoherent.

There was a point in the movie where I thought that things were wrapping up nicely and I became disappointed. Somehow I forgot I was watching a movie by a true talent. And I got played. The ending hits and it’s not completely unexpected but it worked on my dumbass. Not to say the rollout of the events is bad. It’s great. I just was feeling a lack of momentum at one point and interpreted it as bad when really…
