Catherine Stebbins’s review published on Letterboxd:
a narrative mess that cannot be extricated from its history, a film that came about at the worst time & an absolute nightmare scenario for a community seeking to be acknowledged as human beings. it's impossible not to see why this would be seen as such an retroactive endangerment peddled by straight men who just want to exploit a setting because it's wild. i'll be thinking about it for a long long time. it's a true time capsule piece. and it goes HARD. it's a jolt to even concieve of something like this being an MGM release at any point in time. it feels like a pandora's box of masculinity and sexuality in ways i cannot even begin to fathom but want to read about others (mainly gay men now who've reevaluated the film in its second life) who've tried.
the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE
