Ethan Colburn’s review published on Letterboxd:
Did not know Lon Chaney was this talented with his feet...
Chaney plays an armless man who really has arms in an earlier Todd Browning film about circus performers. Chaney is ELECTRIC! The man of 1,000 faces is fantastically expressive in this, if only he could have lived longer into the sound era. Crawford also mentioned that he taught her how to command the screen, and I understand why. She has an innocence to her that she quickly lost going into her work in the 30s. It's a pleasure to see her as his foil in this film.
One of my favorite movie facts is that this movie was considered lost for years, because it was labeled as "unknown" in a film vault.
On Criterion now as part of the Joan Crawford series, check it out if you get the chance!
