So that's Paul Muni eh? Wow. He's similar to James Cagney and John Garfield; little, punchy, completely alert. You can't drag your eyes away.
I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang is an excellent movie with a haunting ending. It speeds through years at quite a pace, but never leaves you behind. The chain gang sequences are like Walker Evans photographs; bleak and beautiful.
The tension rarely lets up either. The scene where he hides underwater and breathes though a straw to evade the approaching bloodhounds is just one of many nerve-shredding moments.
More than all the excitement, the explosions and the betrayals though, Muni's wild eyes in the finale, as he fades back into the blackness, are what will stay with you.
