i read adania shibli’s novella called minor detail right before i saw this - an entirely different format (language, or experience) which also about a young palestinian woman, in her car, at checkpoints. having this referent in my mind gave a very different meaning to the two most surreal sequences with suleiman’s lover, as she marches past the IDF soldiers and when she appears in their target practice.
the novel (which is less than a hundred pages) is stunning and horrible and hard to read. there can be no catharsis
